Trillium Family Services Opens "Mental Health Matters!" at Centennial High School in Gresham
Mental Health Matters!, a program designed to fill gaps in care related to critical mental and behavioral health services, celebrated it’s opening at Centennial High School in Gresham. On Thursday, June 5th students, parents and staff gathered for a ribbon cutting and room naming ceremony to present the program’s initial success and discuss the year-round and special summer services provided.
Mental Health Matters! involves the collaboration of Trillium Family Services and Centennial School District. Funded by a grant from Providence Health Foundation, the program serves the mental health needs of uninsured, underserved and diverse students at Centennial High School and Centennial Alternative Learning Center.
Centennial School District has a significant proportion of children and families who live in poverty, lacking health insurance and access to necessary health care services. In fact, the district contains nearly 40% of all uninsured children in the Portland Metropolitan Area and has a significantly high number of diverse populations. Approximately 12% of Oregon’s children need mental health services of varying degrees, yet in Multnomah County, only one third of those in need receive treatment through traditional sources.
Mental Health Matters! conducts school and community-based screening and referral services, focusing on early identification and intervention. Staff also provide case management, evidence-based psycho-social groups and individual and group skills training. Family support services have been created for families with children experiencing mental and behavioral health issues. All services are provided by a Prevention Specialist from Trillium Family Services and a Counselor from Centennial High School.
